Subject: Meet London Fashion Agencies intern, Beth
How old are you?
20 (I’m 21 in September, I’m not sure when this is going up?!)
Where are you?
I’m currently living in Bexhill, which is a little town just along the south coast from Brighton.
Do you study?
I’ve just finished my first year at Nottingham Trent University studying Fashion Communication & Promotion.
Where have you interned?
This summer I am interning at The London Fashion Agency, which is a Brixton based PR agency dedicated solely to providing affordable services to independent brands & businesses. Before this, I did a freelance internship for the first few months of my first year with another London based PR agency, writing client-related content for the website.
What's been your best intern moment?
If I had to narrow it down to one thing, I would have to go with when I was promoted as such (if an intern can be promoted?!) to head of Photography & Styling for the Agency; it’s a big responsibility but such an amazing opportunity to be given as an intern. Following this, I have been asked to plan, style, source & shoot a big client shoot happening this week which is exciting! I’ve also been able to put together look books for clients & help to design websites both of which are great to put on my CV.
What's been your worst intern moment?
I honestly can’t really think of anything that I regret or that has gone bad. I’ve definitely been lucky with LFA as I’ve really been able to play to my strengths whilst also learning about the inner workings of PR & everything that goes with it.
Where do you go to look for internships?
My uni is really good for passing on intern opportunities that get sent to them, which is how I got my current placement. Aside from that, Fashion Workie & Fashion United are always good places to have a browse if you’re looking for something within the creative industries.
What piece of information would you give to someone just starting out?
They’re not as scary as everyone tells you!! I have definitely got lucky being here at LFA with the level of responsibility with which I’ve been entrusted, but don’t go into your placement expecting something resembling The Devil Wears Prada!
Another thing I wish I’d thought about more was the feasibility & practicality of commuting. I currently have a 5 hour round trip to get to London three days a week which can get a bit draining. If I didn’t love what I was doing, I don’t think I could have kept doing the traveling.
What are you currently doing?
Aside from my internship at LFA, I’m trying to enjoy my time off as much as I can before heading back to uni for the start of the part timesecond year. I’m still running my own blog & Instagram as well as contributing to the LFA journal, though juggling an internpart-timecafé job & my blog is proving pretty challenging!
Whats your career goal?
Right now, I’m not 100% sure on exactly what I want to do after graduating. I’m absolutely loving working in PR at the moment, especially with start ups & independent brands as it gives a greater sense of personalization between the agency & the clients. I’m also interested in experiencing the world of print publications, whether it be journalism or editorial layout, I think it’s something that I would like to try. All I know is that I’d like a career in which I can combine both written & creative elements, so who knows where I’ll end up!
