Subject: Meet the intern who's attending Chelsea College of Art
Name: Jessica Reay
Student, currently finishing the into final year of Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art and Design
Have you ever interned? If so, where?
Yes! My first internship was at Ralph Lauren as a showroom intern for the wholesale side of the company, which involved merchandising the showroom for the buying appointments and lots of steaming! I then went to December Agency as a PR intern assisting with the run up to and logistics of Paula Knorr's debut at London Fashion Week. I also did an internship in buying at House of Fraser.
One thing you wish you knew before starting out in the industry:
How broad it is. Each internship introduced me to different roles I didn't even know existed, there's so much to discover when you are actually in the working environment.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I still don't know 100% what I'm hoping to do, but my 5-year goal is to have built up a network and to be a freelancer.
One piece of advice to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps:
Literally, take every day as it comes. You end up doing a whole range of things you'd never imagine you would do. Be open-minded to what every day has in store for you.
What advice would you give to someone who has no clue what they want to do?
Intern as much as you can! Interning helped me figure out what I didn't want to do more than what I did want to do, which has definitely helped me eliminate areas of the industry that don't interest me as much.
One fun fact about you?
Last summer I sat next to Ross Geller at Franks Cafe, we spoke about Tapas and it was probably the best day of my life
