Subject: Meet the girl thats interned for the Olsen sisters
How old are you?
I am 22- on the cusp of "intern age" and working professional.
Where are you from?
I am from Cape Town- South Africa...my motherland.
Do you study?
I finished studying Fashion Marketing in New York earlier this year at Parsons School of Design. Parsons was made famous by Project Runway and it became my dream to walk those pedigree halls after the likes of Tom Ford, Donna Karen, Marc Jacobs etc. Before joining the fashion cult I studied a Business Degree.
Where have you interned?
I have interned for the designers Franco during market week in Paris. An Amazing evening and bridal designer - Naeem Khan, as well as Elizabeth&James - a New York brand founded by the Olsen Twins (sorry to name drop).
What is your best intern moment?
My best intern moment was getting more responsibility and being "promoted" off of the menial tasks they first make us interns do ...ie) closet archive duty! I enjoyed going to trade shows with the merchandising team to meet buyers. The big one in New York is Coterie, all the brands you can think of come and set up booths, buyers from independent stores around the US fly in to see the lines and choose to stock the label or not.
I also love preparing backstage during fashion week, it is chaotic, frantic, an adrenalin rush, but to designer's vision come to life is awesome.
I loved working in the press department and getting to contact stylists of celebrities, with red carpet dresses I thought would suit their client. (That is maybe the tiniest slice of the industry that is glamorous).
What is your worst intern moment?
Haha!, There have been lots! Interning is kind of like free slave labour, but in the fashion industry, it is an imperative gateway to earning your stripes. I wasn't a fan of running around New York all day on errands, picking up garments from grimy factories. I would be on the subway maybe 10 times a day from Bergdorf Goodman uptown to Vogue down in the financial district. ( on the plus side it kept my legs really toned haha) I guess most interns agree we feel we can offer more than a DHL delivery courier/fabric waitresses and we wish companies would put our skills to better use.
Where do you go to look for internships?
I usually go to my university portal, as many companies directly advertise there. I also go to fashion jobs.com. FashionUnited.com. Or if you know a company you love, go to their website directly, find an email address and send them your resume. The most direct contact you can get the better.
What are you currently doing?
Currently, I am looking for an entry-level position in Europe. Most companies are wanting interns first until proven worthy of staying which I am happy to do as long as it is monetarily compensated.
What is your career goal?
My long-term career goal is to be Cheif of Marketing (CMO) for a big luxury brand. Right now I am hoping to get into digital marketing and influencer-based marketing.
Where can people find you?
