Name: Erminia Scordo
Job Title: Buyer @ Coach - Women’s Small Leather Goods, Ready to Wear, Footwear abs lifestyle Accessories.
Main job responsibilities:
Selecting a strong commercial range for the European and international market. Defining the assortments by analysing product performance, customer feedback, and consumer/competitor trends. The role requires a lot of analytical skills and being business savvy as you are constantly reviewing what works and what doesn’t.
Did you intern? if so where, if not, what was your first job?
I was very lucky and got my first job at ASOS before graduating from university. I started my career as Merchandising Admin Assistant, but 6 months in I realised I was a more driven by the creative side of the business and was able to side step into a Buyers Admin role. I was at ASOS for 3 years. It was great place to work. The atmosphere/role was very fast pace and helped me to deal with the day to day pressures of a buying role.
What is one piece of advice for someone wanting to get into buying?
I think interning is very important. It gives you an idea for what the role is like and how suited you are. It is also a great way to network and build contacts. The fashion world is tiny. A lot of people know each other, and I can’t stress how important it is to build a strong professional network.
What advice would you give to someone who doesn't know what they want to do?
Don’t be afraid of change. Try a few things and see what works for you. I knew that a merchandising role wasn’t 100% the right fit for me and felt it was important to make a change. You spend 8 hours a day working so it’s important that you’re doing something you enjoy.
Whose career in your industry inspires you?
Delphine Arnold - She is the first woman and youngest person to be a member of the Management Board of LVMH. Very few women sit at the top of luxury fashion houses.
Favourite outfit for work?
I love tailoring but also want to be comfortable at work. My favourite outfit would normally be a pair of straight leg jeans, black or white tee, a blazer and loafers or boots.
Where can people find you?
