A press assistant’s primary goal is to effectively manage sample movement, everything from pitching stories and concepts to magazines to sending out the samples to photoshoots. They liaise with stylists and editors in order to achieve credits in magazines, supplements and online. Press assistants gain and extremely holistic view of a company, as they will often liaise with design, wholesale, merchandising and buying in order to create a strategy for the season, which will optimise coverage and awareness of the brand. The role of a pr and brand assistant is to support across all areas of running a press office, from planning press events to managing the PR inbox, to sample and gifting management. A big part of the role can be assisting manage external PR agencies too. The brand side of the position entails identifying and activating relevant partnerships, which can range from editorial to influencer collaborations. The role can involve working on a numerous projects at once and be fairly fast pace, however no two days are the same.. which keeps things exciting! The role of a freelancer ultimately depends on the agency/client you're working for. From there, it's really just assisting those around you to the best of your ability to ensure that the tasks leading up to the end of your assignment (whether it be a show, an in-store event or even sample trafficking) are executed efficiently and effectively. You're there to help out with the team's huge work load, chime in with your opinion/experiences, and let those around you see your capabilities as a potential employee. In my career, my role has been to assist multiple publicity teams on different fashion shows by coordinating event logistics, seating charts, guest and media attendance, reporting, and assisting onsite both backstage and front of house as part of the staff.
